The Old Crumpet Factory

The Old Crumpet Factory

Sue Smith

After the War it was a crumpet factory at one time run by a Mr Charles Marshall. But it was built originally as a sports club and used in the 1930's. As children we used to go up there when it was empty and (without permission of course) play in the building.  During the War Americans were billeted there and Bill (my brother) and I used to collect and then return socks as my mother had volunteered to mend them. The American soldiers were very generous to us and they used to give us chocolate and empty Sweet Caporal (cigarettes) packets which were highly prized by us.
